Spain set to beat Japan in world life expectancy
We’ve been saying it for years, nothing beats the Mediterranean lifestyle and yesterday the news broke that Spain is set to beat Japan in world life expectancy league table for the year 2040. According to research, the Spanish are expected to have an average lifespan of 85.5 years, and this is mainly do to what they eat, according to the authors of the most comprehensive study of the global burden of disease.
According to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation in Seattle, US, the biggest threats to our health and longevity will be obesity, high blood pressure and blood sugar, tobacco use and drinking alcohol.
Doctor Christopher Murray who is the director of the IHME at the University of Washington, says that the Spanish tend to do really well in most of those areas, although tobacco is an area where Spain can do better.
After Spain and Japan, the countries with the greatest longevity in 2040 are projected to be Singapore (85.4 years), Switzerland (85.2 years), Portugal and Italy (84.5 years), Israel (84.4 years), France (84.2 years), Australia and Luxembourg (84.1 years).

The Mediterranean diet, loaded with fruit, vegetables, fish and olive oil, is responsible for the low death rate from heart disease and must make people healthier overall. It means the Spanish people are never too stressed and stress is the biggest killer.
